Soldier's Letter 2 pages, 8vo., Fredericksburg, VA, Aug. 23rd, 1862. Charles D. Garlick (Co. I, 8th Connecticut Infantry, severely wounded at Antietam, MD) writes to his parents. The letter reads in part:
"...We have not seen anything to create a very great excitement. We brought in a couple of contrabands that were trying to get inside of our lines from Richmond.
We have heard considerable heavy cannonading since yesterday morning in the direction of Culpepper Courthouse. Probably is between Jackson and Pope. (2nd Manassas). We know not how soon we shall be called uppon but whenever we are I hope we shall do our duty as a soldier...
