Soldier's Letter, 4 pages, 8vo., Camp near the Battlefield, May the 5, 1862. Dwight W. Stannard (Co. A, 97th New York Infantry, wounded Wilderness, VA; wounded White Oak Swamp, VA,  right arm amputated) writes to his wife pertaining to the battle of Chancellorsville.

The letter is written in pencil (as most letters wtitten on the battlefild are), on Union patriotic stationery. 

The 97th New York was a hard fought regiment and Stannard was in all their engagements including 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness,etc.
