Autograph Letter Signed (ALS), 2 pp., 8vo., Richmond (VA) 5/23/64. Soldier James H. Cunningham, Co.F, 2nd MO Inf., WIA- Corinth, writes W.H. Smith (2nd & 6th Mo. Regt.)  that Yankees have cut the RR at Hanover Junction, Lee had fallen back, Butler driven back, Lee whips Grant everytime, Grant has lost 5000-7000 men, gave them whiskey before storming CSA works (Spotsylvania), Confederates had nothing to do but "stick" their bayonets in them when they came up to the entrenchments, Lee reinforced every day, heavy CSA losses, heard that Gen. Johnson has had some fighting. etc. With postally used cover (stamp removed). F-VF
