"Special Order No. 53" hand written from Fort Sumter, issued by command of Lt. Col. Stephen Elliott who was in charge of occupying Fort Sumter from September 5th, 1863 until May of 1864. The document is in the hand of G. A. Campbell (1st South Carolina Battn Infantry), Secretary to Elliott:

"Hd. Qrs. Fort Sumter

                 March 14 1864

Special Order No. 53

Lt. V. Duc is hereby detached from his command to take charge of working parties during the stay of his command at this post..."

There were many "working parties" needed during the Federal shelling of Fort Sumter. Much of the men in these parties were slaves from the Charleston area.

Virgil Duc enlisted on July 1st 1862 as 2nd Lieutenant in Co. E, 25th South Carolina Infantry. He died during the final fighting in Charleston during January 1865.

A rare actual order from Fort Sumter. Fine with some small paper nicks.
