Burton N. Harrison (1838-1904), Private Secretary to President Jefferson Davis.

Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) on printed CSA Executive Department letterhead, 1 page, 4to. Richmonf, Va. 2/27/63 to "His Excellency M.L. Bonham, Columbia, S.C./ Governor: I have the honor to acknowledge, by the direction of the President, the receipt of your letter of the 10th inst. covering a certified copy of an act of the South Carolina Legislature to acct in the Confederate Government a property in a part of the Columbia Canal for the Term of 12 years. Very respectfully, Your obt. Serv. Burton N. Harrison, Private Secretary."

President Jefferson Davis appointed Burton Norville Harrison of Mississippi his Private Secretary on March 17, 1862. Harrison was an attorney (Yale 1859). He was captured by the Union Army with Davis and imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison and then Fort Delaware from where he was released in 1866 and admitted to the Bar in New York City. He married his Richmond sweetheart, Constance Cary, in 1867.
