Soldier's Letter, 4 pages, 8vo., "In the trenches near Petersburg, VA", July 10, 1864. With an additional Confederate Hampton's Legion soldier's letter, picked up from the battlefield dated May 6th, 1864 from Camp near Columbia (SC), 1 page, 8vo.

Edmund F. Churchill (Co. E, 18th Massachusetts Infantry) writes to his father. For full transcription of the letter, please see the scan. Churchill also sends his father a rebel letter that he had picked up at the battlefield with his notation on the back:

"A rebel letter picked up on the battlefield where Burnside 9th corps fought on the 17 June 1864 near Petersburg. E.F. C."

The Confederate soldier's letter was written by John F. Eikerenkoetter (Co. C, South Carolina Hampton's Legion Infantry) to his brother.
