Merriwether Thompson (Jeff) (1826-76), Brig. General, Missouri State Guards and guerrilla fighter known as "Swamp Fox". 1864 Missouri Raid.

Autograph Letter Signed (ALS)., 1 page, 4to., Ponchitoula, La. 8/20/62 to General Earl Van Dorn, Jackson, Miss."...The company of Capt. Robert McDonald, of the Missouri Volunteers from my old Brigade is now stationed in Jackson, and are doing no good for themselves or country. This was one of my Artillery companies, which turned over as Battery and outfit at Memphis to go on the River Defense Fleet. It is now entirely without arms, and if there is no outfit for them as Artillery, they may be temporarily armed as Infantry, and put on duty. They object to being permanently converted into Infantry as my other two Artillery companies were, but cannot object to a temporary change. They are a fine set of men, and if you would order them equipped, and to report to me - I could have a Company to hold Fort Pike or some such point, should I be fortunate enough to capture it. They were also on the "Arkansas"  (refers to the exploits performed by his Missouri Brigade, which had manned the naval guns on the "Arkansas" in July when it ran through Farragut's and Porter's fleets containing 450 guns) and are over their dread of Big Guns. The Captain was placed under arrest before we left Grenada for some trivial offence - but has been with his company all the time, doing duty, and might be placed on regular duty with propriety. Your Most Respectfully, M Jeff Thompson MSG, Brig. Genl. on Special Service C.S.A."

Portions of the two fold separations have been reinforced with scotch tape; otherwise letter written in dark ink and fine. Great content!
