Soldier's Letter, 1 page, 4to., Head Qrs. 100th N.Y.V., Saint Helena Island, South Carolina, February 12th 1863. George Brown Dandy (Colonel, 100th New York Infantry and later Brevet Brigadier General) writes:

"In obedience to instructions from Brigade Hd. Qrs. I have to report that none of the 100th NY were engaged (or present) at the burning of the negro quarters on this island the 11th inst. As soon as the quarters were perceived on fire I had the regiment formed and the company rolls called at once. Officers also visited the scene of the conflagration and found none of the regiment engaged in that disgraceful proceeding....S.B. Dandy, Col. 100th NYV".
