Soldier's Letter, 4 pages, 4to., Front Royal (Virginia), June 10/62. John McCahan (Co. G, 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry) writes to his sister pertaining to battle action near Harrisonburg, VA:

"...On Friday evening last part of our Brigade was ambuscaded by 8000 of the enemy. We had only 4 companies of cavalry and 130 of the Bucktails. Our men made a splendid fight on that evening. Col. Kane of the Bucktails was taken prisoner.  His men fought crowds of the enemy till they got to their Col. but were overpowered by numbers and could not rescue him...

I heard the noted Gen. Ashby of the famous Rebel cavalry was killed by our men on Friday..."
