Soldier's Letter, 2 pages, 8vo., New Bern (North Carolina), April 16, 1862. Samuel Flagg (25th Massachusetts Infantry) writes to a friend on a captured Confederate patriotic cover (CN-3, Verse 5, Imprint 17). Catalog value $1500.00.

"Newbern April 16, 1862

My dear friend,

I find one sheet of Confederate Manufacture which I will consign to your keeping. With us here it is quite an object to bring to our use everything made by Rebel hands. Thinking of those so much is deposited into Uncle Sam's treasury. This is the nicest specimen of writing paper I have as yet seen, & the motto is truly patriotic, if lived up to...

I learn from those who have lived here  many years that the society of Newbern was truly fine & certainly I never saw a city more beautifully laid out...Saml. Flagg"

Reinforced fold splits, tape residue, otherwise fine. Rare patriotic design.
