Ormsby M. Mitchell (1809-62), Major General USA. Established Naval Observatory. Participated at the Department of Ohio and the Department of the South. Died of yellow fever.

Autograph Letter Signed (ALS), 1 page, 8vo., Head Quarters 3rd Division, Camp Jefferson, December 21st, 1861. Mitchell writes to Captain Warren P. Edgarton, Batty. E., 1st Ohio Light Artillery:

"You are authorized to commence the target practice at 2 P.M. I will send an Aid De Camp to your Quarters that hour to learn the precise ground you intend to use.

I must again beg you to be prudent and cautious; and that due notice be given within the limits of the region of danger...O.M.Mitchell, Brig. Gen. Commandg."

Glue stains verso. Could have been glued to a scrapbook. Fine. Rare autograph.
